Case Study: A New Approach to Risk Sharing and Compliance Management

This innovation explores ways to re-imagine the approach to risk and compliance management, by testing the value and impact of well-designed and facilitated ‘brave encounters’ between important yet under- or un-connected parts of the value chain within risk and compliance. This involves bringing together actors from donor organisations, intermediary INGOs and local CSOs that might not usually engage with each other to engage in a facilitated discussion where they can talk openly and honestly about the real motivations, needs and impacts of the system in place. For INGOs, this would include finance officers, compliance officers or programme officers who are more likely to impose controls or bureaucratic burdens on recipient organisations. The prototype tested whether and how good conversations between professionals who do not normally connect could build new relationships and thus a different working atmosphere, so that the existing systems designed to manage and mitigate risk, and to handle accountability, could be built in a more fair, reasonable and effective way.
